Darfur Crisis

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 6 months ago

The War in Darfur is a conflict that started in February of 2003. This conflict seems to be tribal and ethnic rather than religious. On one side of the conflict there is the Sudanese military and the Janjaweed, which is known as men on a horseback. On the other side there is a variety of rebel groups. The Sudanese government denies supporting the Janjaweed, but there is evidence of them providing money and assistance to the militia and participating in some of the attacks. The Janjaweed have been attacking civlians, mostly of which are muslims. This conflict has caused as many as 200000 deaths from violence and disease. The Sudanese government have been arresting journalists and they have been able to “obscure much of what has gone on”(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur_conflict). The United States government gives this conflict a name, genocide. In March 20007, the UN has decided to take international action to give guidance to the civilians. On August 31, 2004, the UN Security Council approved of the Resolution 1706. The Resolution 1706 called for 17,300 forces to add to the poorly funded 7000 troops. Sudan did not like the resolution and told the UN forces that if they enter their region then they would be seen as foreign invaders. Sexual abuse is widely known in Darfur. Women and children are being sexually abused and raped constantly. Men and boys are murdered while they leave the women and young girls to rape. The humanitarian crisis in Darfur has caused murders, rapes of inoccent women and children, and several burnt villages. Along with the constant danger of attacks, the civilians have to deal with disease, fatigue and a threat of seasonal rains. Much of this crisis has moved from Sudan into Chad.
