Welcome to the 1101 Help Forum! One thing businesses have discovered about wiki is the way they can streamline communication and collective problem-solving efforts in corporate settings. For example, if numerous remote users encounter the same problem, one wiki post can settle an issue that would take numerous emails to resolve (this is bad redundancy... we'll talk about good redundancy later). In other words this solution "costs less."
Don't panic, y'all. It takes a couple sessions (the first week or so) to get things rolling.
Some of you haven't been able to find the sidebar, which conveniently houses links to the syllabus, calendar, and our class roster page.
All you need to do look closely at the sidebar, which might be set to "quickstart." Click on the third option, which says "sidebar." Now you will be able to see the syllabus, etc.
Where to begin, then? I'm going to link you directly to the course calendar: http://1101writingunwriting.pbwiki.com/Calendar+and+Log+of+Class+Sessions,+due+dates
See JanEight and JanTen? These links have the instructions for this week's reading and blogging--easy stuff like reading the syllabus, setting up a page for yourself, and selecting a creative commons license.
Please feel free to ask more questions as they come up. Post them here, on this page. I'll jump on the wiki later tonight and help out there, too.

Questions
1. Are we supposed to be buying any books through Oasis? They list a Composition book we are "supposed" to purchase, or only the two mentioned within the site?
A. Order used copies via Fetchbook or Amazon. They are just in time, all the time.

2. Multiple questions:
Posted 01/08/08 (To avoid confusion in upcoming weeks)
While I have made simple edits on a wiki, I have not used one completely.
Today's assignment has me a bit confused, I'm not sure what you want us to do?
You want us to read the JanEight entry, correct? Then I get lost when you tell us to look at the JanTen entry. Also, I get even more confused when you tell us to make the recent changes page our splash page?
I understand you want us to make our own page, I can handle that but then you tell me to 'create 3 links within this wiki, between peer writing. Bridge at least one of these links with a fresh new page, linked to both wiki pages found to be resonant. Annotate, explain, or reflect on these connections, which may causal,or acausal; meaningful, or nonsensical' --Huh? Within my own page or within the entire wiki itself? What exactly do you mean by 'between peer writing?'
A. All great questions! I will address the JanTen prompt that asks us to make links between each others' writing on the wiki:
Very, very, soon you will make and break links willy nilly. Getting started is the only tricky part, I promise. Don't worry too much about the "meaning" of the connection you seek to make by linking one page to another. Just do as I just did, above, when I mentioned Ksaun. Or click edit right on this page, and take not of the linking methods I have deployed:
a) CamelCase - creates a new page
b) bracket + url + space bar + text of your choosing + bracket
like this: I just found this interesting take on the creative commons from the perspective of a practicing musician
c) in pbwiki (not all wikis are created equal), you can also place brackets around any word or phrase to create a "hole," like this:
fixing a hole where the rain gets in
then, later, you or a classmate can plug in a url, or begin writing in the new space (fixing the hole, as it were).
Basically, make a page, and play around. I found a new feature just this week--our wiki has a built in tagging feature AND a function that lets us post pages to social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us (check the bottom right corner).
3) I am struggling with the "invention" portion of my Cover Sheet. Can you further clarify as to what subject matter we are supposed to address here?
extra extra, read out about it, creative commons html causes minor problems in pbwiki
The cc license in pbwiki seems to cause saved information to vanish....but it's all still there, don't worry.
this is a small glitch, a minor bug, but for some reason it's still there. Interesting! Ksaun has hacked it already, though, so if you're having trouble with this, go to her page, click edit, and learn how she got around this minor bug.

Q) I tried to put a Creative Commons License on my page but after I paste the info and save it, it just comes up blank on my page!
Here's how you fix this:
Step 1: Find the area in the code where: style="border-width:0" is written.
Step 2: Delete the 0 so that it becomes this: style="border-width:"
Step 3: Save and problem solved.
see here click edit on Ian's license or check the page history to see how easy it is to fix this
Q. Why does my "Quick Start" menu on the side only show 2 of 3 completed tasks?
A. Ignore Quick Start, we don't need it. Click on the third option, "sidebar" to see the syllabus, calendar, roster, polices, and more, recent activities to see changes....but don't worry about quickstart

q. trey will youtube videos count for our freesound assignment?
a. Yes, yes, yes! mix 'em in there, and "score" your composition accordingly.

Hey all, this memo from the dean's office agrees with Ksaun's diagnosis of the spam Turnage found in her inbox yesterday:
"Hello all,
I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the email below sent from USF F.C.U. This is another scam/fraud issue. As stated below, please do not respond to the message and delete it as if it was junk mail. I’ve also been notified by students that this has been sent to them as well. Please forward this message to your students that it is another scam email.
Thanks!
Jennifer"
